Cats are trolling, the hypetrain is rolling

Kunos being Kunos.. The private Twitter Accounts of the core devs currently are teasing “something” on a Friday,  17th:

*Dafuq what is this?

If you don’t know Kunos that well, they used to announce important announcements before. So one possibility is that we learn something new about Kunos’ plans and achievements on the next Friday, 17th – that would be in 10 days.

Which one could it be, and did they give us some hints? Let’s have a look.

#1 The obvious

The most obvious things to expect are the ones we already know about: Cars and tracks that are already announced, like:

Toyota Celica
Toyota GT-86 GT4
Toyota TS040 HYBRID
Lamborghini Aventador
Lamborghini Asterion
Lamborghini Gallardo GT3
Lamborghini Veneno
Ruf RT 35 S
Ford GT GT3
Alfa Romeo Daytona Type 33/2
Ferrari F138 (2013 Ferrari F1)
Audi Quattro S1 Group B
Audi Sport TT Cup 2015
Audi TT VLN 2014
Audi R8 LMS Ultra 2016 (GT3)
Audi TT 2015
Audi R18 E-Tron Quattro (LMP1-H)
Mclaren 570s
Mclaren P1 GTR
Maserati (No specific car models yet)

But – that wouldn’t make too much sense. Kunos usually teased us this way to introduce a real burner licence like Lamborghini in December 2014.

#1 CSI:Twitter I

The Detectives already pointed out, 4 devs post each one cat picture within one minute, 11:19 AM Italian timezone. All the images are prepared with the hashtags #savethedate, #AssettoCorsa and #Friday17th. So they have been prepared and posted in a coordinated way.

Now you could shout Caterham!, but I’m afraid there is no special meaning when Kunos is posting about cats. The Kunos logo is a cat, most of their forum avatars are cats, they love cats and even Kunos is the name of Stefano’s cat.

But ignoring this, there is a pretty decent one out there:

800px-logo_jaguar_cars-svg

Still don’t think so, cats are way too common to Kunos to have actual meaning. More likely they want to see us struggle for personal amusement.

#2 CSI:Twitter II

Even worse, Stefano answered with another “hint”, giving the numbers 0-9 and 10 (which could be the same for a programmer):

But this was a direct answer to the question if Kunos bought Turn 10 (see also), so here I assume this is just a joke. After all this must be extremely amusing for the devs, pretty sure they currently enjoy browsing around the web very much.

#3 The less obvious

I’m waiting for one specific licence announcement since December 2015, when this video was released:

friday17th_astonmartin

Yep, that looks like the Aston Martin Vantage GTE. Aston Martin was also the #5 poll result, where the 4 manufacturers in front already found their way into Assetto Corsa (Alfa Romeo, Audi, Ruf and Nissan). Actually I’m not even convinced it isn’t already announced and I just missed it.

But the video seems to need some grain of salt, as it also displays another sensational car:

friday17th_ferrari

It seems very unlikely that Kunos could obtain a Formula 1 licence – they are known as being crazily unappealing and expensive.

(Update: This is bullshit, forget about it)

#4 Number magic: 17

Then we have the date left, Friday 17th. Maybe it’s a double, indicating both the announcement date for the hype and a real reference?

I found something interesting here, did you know that a Friday 17th is the Italian (more precise Roman) pendant to the English Friday 13th – the unlucky day? Btw. it’s Tuesday 13th for Spanish countries. You know the superstitious who leave out a 13th floor and so on: The Renault 17 was named R117 for Italy for this reason. Coincidence?

I also tried to find some interesting Motorsports dates for the sfortunato day, but couldn’t find much more than the next Formula 1 (again?) race next week, but you wouldn’t use the Friday for reference, would you? The same goes for the start of the 24h of Le Mans.

Maybe it’s way back in the past? Here are “some” Friday 17ths – let me know if you spot something interesting here:

That’s fun, and I’m sure the whole Kunos team is laughing at people like me right now. My conclusion: If it’s a manufacturer, it has to be Aston Martin. No stupid reference like cat, 10, Friday 17th – but it is the next one in a community poll result where we already have seen the top 4 made it into Assetto Corsa so far. Additionally we’ve actually seen the GTE version on the screen!

Actually I’m so convinced it has to be Aston Martin that I face the possibility the licence was already announced, and I unforgivably missed it.

Update

Obviously I can’t read. Forget about the section regarding the Ferrari F138 – that car is already in the list of announced cars! So you obviously don’t need a F1 licence for older ones, and the agreement with Ferrari is enough.
